Myers & Briggs’ Personality Typing, Explained

Using theories based on the work of psychologist Carl Jung, Isabel Myers and Katharine Briggs created their personality typology to help people discover their own strengths and gain a better understanding of how people are different. They proposed four personality dimensions: Introversion vs. Extraversion, Sensing vs. Intuition, Thinking vs. Feeling, and Judging vs. Perceiving. The sum of a person’s four preferred styles becomes their personality type.

Key Principles of Myers & Briggs’ Personality Typing

Myers and Briggs’ theory of personality typing relies on self-reporting and is based on three key principles. The mother and daughter team who created the system believed that our personalities are part of our ingrained nature. As such, though they may develop over time, our personality types do not change. They also held that each of the 16 types is equally valid, with no type being in any way superior to any other. And finally, both Myers and Briggs firmly believed that our personality type is not a limitation or a predictor of our behavior. They believed that knowing our personality type would help us better understand ourselves and others.
